aii & ikbal

duo project

Aii & Ikbal have been working together since 2006 as a cross-disciplinary duo exploring experimental sound and visual practices. Ikbal studied Western classical guitar and music education, while Aii studied visual art, both at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. In 2008, they co-founded Ethnictro, a Yogyakarta-based creative space dedicated to sound, performance, and music education. Alongside developing the space and their collaborative work, both also continue to pursue their individual artistic projects.

Their practice has evolved from spontaneous experiments into research-driven works that transform social issues, urbanism, history, and the environment into sound art, visual pieces, and three-dimensional installations. Their projects often take shape through diverse presentation formats and collaborations with interdisciplinary artists worldwide.

Over the years, they have learned deeply from cultural exchanges, engaging with different ways of life, perspectives, and traditions. Their primary artistic interest lies in exploring how modernity and capitalism reshape traditions and cultural memory, and how these shifts can be critically and creatively reimagined through art.
